The Beast and the Business Train The last operating DDA40X leads a Union Pacific engineering special on the Peoria Sub. north of Akron, Illinois. UP 6936 is 98 feet long, weighs in at 270 tons and holds about 8,000 gallons of #2 diesel fuel. There are two 16-645 engines under the long hood; total displacement is 20,640 cubic inches (!!). Each engine holds about 300 gallons of lube oil and a like amount of cooling water, and each truck (bogie) has four powered axles. I believe this remains the most powerful land vehicle ever built. A big thanks goes out to Union Pacific for the money and dedication it takes to keep this wonderful example of American engineering and manufacture in operating order.
